Battle of the Blades
Battle Of The Blades is a fierce athletic competition filled with grace and drama. It takes 8 of Canada's elite Olympic and world famous female figure skaters and teams them up with eight of the NHL's greatest hockey players. Hosted by legendary sports broadcaster (Hockey Night in Canada) Ron McLean and four-time World and Canadian champ Kurt Browning, Battle of the Blades is the ultimate pair's figure skating showdown. The series takes place over seven weeks and 14 episodes. Each week the pairs take to the ice at Toronto's iconic Maple Leaf Gardens and train with world-class choreographers and coaches. Every week the pairs come up with a new routine for the live performance show, throughout this process the teams experience extreme highs and lows. Viewers vote for their favourite pairs and the bottom two teams are revealed in the dramatic results show which consists of a skate-off and ultimately elimination for one team. The judging panel is comprised of former Olympian and world famous choreographer and commentator Sandra Bezic plus two-time Olympic gold medalist and famed figure skating analyst Dick Button. Joining Sandra and Dick every week is a special guest judge, in season 1 we were joined by Lani McDonald, Doug Gilmore, Kristi Yamaguchi, Bret Hedican, George Stroumboulopoulos, Katrina Wit, Kelly Hrudey and Don Cherry. Ultimately the three judges decide which of the bottom two teams will continue on in the competition. Each week, the eliminated pair will donate $25,000 to the charity of their choice. The winning pair will be chosen by viewer votes and will donate $100,000 to their favourite charity. Produced by Insight Productions in association with CBC Television.
